At The Hughes Family Wines, we make only two wines per vintage, a Red Blend and a White Blend.

THE CELLAR

We have built and underground cellar using used shipping containers, natural stones and other materials from our area.

Our soils are red and high in clay content. This produces wines that are dark, dense and masculine. Our mission in life is to tame them a bit a give them more subtle and feminine tones. We achieve this by using whole bunch fermentation, harvesting early and breaking the skins as little as possible.

January 2019: Off with a bang (and squish)

Mid January came with a bang as harvest began and the cellar erupted like a busy bee-hive. Tractors chugging through the cellar, stacked crates of grapes, instructions shouted over the hum of the generator and thorough shaking of the de-stemmer, and the slow and steady descent of the basket press. White Blend 2015

This elegant Swartland white blend is naturally made. Barrel fermented with subtle aromas of apricots, lime, pineapple and creamy nuances. Fresh, yet bold with lingering minerality.

Red Blend 2014

Dry land farming and a natural approach to viticulture brings forth aromas of dark berries and mineral overtones. Warm mouth feel and silky finish on ripe tannins.
